Broncos Heartbreak

January 23, 2013

Brett Wilhelm and I had the pleasure of freezing our tails off while photographing the Broncos lose in dramatic and in most Broncos fans opinion infuriating manner to the Baltimore Ravens last week. ESPN The Magazine hired us to cover the game and specifically to focus on the two starting quarterbacks. We both covered the action on the field, but each of us stuck to one side to get features of the qbs during breaks in the action. I thought I was wise to pick the Broncos side due to my confidence that Peyton Manning and the Broncos would wreck havoc on the aging Ravens defense. Turns out my overconfidence and the Broncos may have paralleled each other and Brett ended up with a ton more coverage of the winning qb and thus a much better chance at getting a cover of the magazine. As it turns out, Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers trumped us all and will be the cover. You never know though. It was at least fun to weather the storm and shoot a little playoff football. Here are a couple of our favorites from the game.

NCAA Champion Magazine Fall 2012

October 25, 2012

The Fall 2012 NCAA Champion Magazine features Ashley Priess, a gymnast from the University of Alabama. Having clinched a national championship for her school on the beam last year, I knew heading down to Tuscaloosa that we really wanted to show her on that apparatus. Here is how it turned out.

US Women’s National Team

September 24, 2012

The US Women’s National Soccer Team played Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City this past week. I had the great fortune to photograph the game for International Sports Images, Inc., the official photographic agency for the US Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams.
Between a packed house, a lot of goal scoring and the retirement of Head Coach Pia Sundhage, there were a ton of opportunities to make some nice photographs. Here’s a quick glimpse at some of my work from the game.

NCAA cover brings home gold award

August 1, 2012

For TABPI, the Trade Association of Business Publications International, the Tabbie Awards represent the best in trade publications from medical, digital, to everything in between.

The 2012 Tabbie Awards featured nearly 500 entries, with nominations coming from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, France, India, Singapore and South Africa.

Photographer, Jamie Schwaberow, won the Gold Tabbie Award for his cover photograph of NCAA Champion Magazine featured below. The judging comments were “This photograph is great… the basketballs frame the subject perfectly, it’s colorful without being distracting and it sets a great tone. The copy balances the photograph nicely.”

Photographers like Schwaberow at RCA shoot the Champion Magazine covers on a quarterly basis profiling certain student athletes excelling within NCAA athletics.

Reebok Commercial

June 20, 2012

I was recently hired by ESPN The Magazine to photograph a Reebok CrossFit Commercial featuring Peyton and Eli Manning. Admittedly, I misspoke from the start. As I was introduced to Peyton and Eli, I mentioned that if at all possible, I’d like to get some behind the scenes access and hopefully some funny/endearing moments between the two of them. The record screeched to a halt as Peyton replied “We are serious about CrossFit and the new Reebok product. I don’t know what funniness or anything off set has to do with this commercial.” Not exactly the start I was hoping for or for that matter the access I wanted, but it all worked out and I was still able to pull off a couple of images of brotherly camaraderie and fun while on set. Championship moments

January 10, 2012

This weekend we produced two pieces for the BCS Championship Game in New Orleans.

First, we showed up early to document the ‘love for the game’ and the passion that drives both teams and their strong base of fans.

Secondly, as NCAA photos we turned the game into a moving time-lapse of photos showing the excitement of the game (minus the score!).

Championship weekend

December 12, 2011

It’s that time of year again when every weekend hard working athletes compete for an NCAA championship.

And this past weekend, 4 of our photographers were spread out all over the country to cover a few of the them.

San Antonio. Berkeley. Pensacola. Atlanta.

Ranging from water polo to soccer. And Division I to Division III.

Take a look and see what they were up to!
