Broncos Heartbreak

January 23, 2013

Brett Wilhelm and I had the pleasure of freezing our tails off while photographing the Broncos lose in dramatic and in most Broncos fans opinion infuriating manner to the Baltimore Ravens last week. ESPN The Magazine hired us to cover the game and specifically to focus on the two starting quarterbacks. We both covered the action on the field, but each of us stuck to one side to get features of the qbs during breaks in the action. I thought I was wise to pick the Broncos side due to my confidence that Peyton Manning and the Broncos would wreck havoc on the aging Ravens defense. Turns out my overconfidence and the Broncos may have paralleled each other and Brett ended up with a ton more coverage of the winning qb and thus a much better chance at getting a cover of the magazine. As it turns out, Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers trumped us all and will be the cover. You never know though. It was at least fun to weather the storm and shoot a little playoff football. Here are a couple of our favorites from the game.

Reebok Commercial

I was recently hired by ESPN The Magazine to photograph a Reebok CrossFit Commercial featuring Peyton and Eli Manning. Admittedly, I misspoke from the start. As I was introduced to Peyton and Eli, I mentioned that if at all possible, I’d like to get some behind the scenes access and hopefully some funny/endearing moments between the two of them. The record screeched to a halt as Peyton replied “We are serious about CrossFit and the new Reebok product. I don’t know what funniness or anything off set has to do with this commercial.” Not exactly the start I was hoping for or for that matter the access I wanted, but it all worked out and I was still able to pull off a couple of images of brotherly camaraderie and fun while on set. Last week I was contacted to photograph Tim Tebow during the Denver Broncos vs San Diego Chargers game for ESPN The Magazine. They were doing several stories on a variety of athletes for their Plan B Issue. The idea being that Kyle Orton was the current starter, but for how long? When would they turn to Tebow? Well, as it turned out, it happened by halftime of the game I was photographing. I went from trying to come up with interesting ways to photograph Tebow continually standing on the sidelines, to actually photographing him in action, which was a huge relief. He was named the starting QB by the Broncos the following week and all of a sudden this was a much more important story. Luckily, they deemed it important enough to make the decision to run Tebow on the cover and I was awarded with my first ESPN The Magazine cover shot as well as an inside spread of photographs.
